The Artist , a new Silent Film!

Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo in The Artist
I am totally excited for the new coming french silent film The Artist! Yes, you heard right a silent film. For all of us who enjoys watching old silent films this will no doubt be a lovely treat!

I haven't seen the whole movie yet, but so far I could say that I have immensely enjoyed watching the preview.  Daniel Sarath from New In Cinema described the film as "roaring and creative crowd-pleaser that will inspire laughter, joy and cheer".

The Artist is a Romance story that takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies.

Jean Dujardin who plays George Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause to loose his fame and career. Then everything changed when he meets Peppy Miller a young dancer, played by Bérénice Bejo. Perhaps she will be the one to help him get the big break. Or perhaps he has found a real meaning of his life.

The story so far is very real and captivating. And I have one word about the film production itself, magnifique! The first cilp that I saw I had to take a second look because I wasn't sure if I was watching an old film or a new film. Besides that the movie was made in black and white, which adds that classic look.  It was also made to look vintage, with captions and frame and all.

The film locations, the designs, the tap dancing, the performance, and the costumes, including the hair, makeup, and of course we can't forget la moustache sported by Mr. Valentin, all took me right back to the 20's.

I have been always mesmerized by silent films all my life. But just recently when I watched a Charlie Chaplin movie The City Lights that was when I realized that a silent movie can reach your emotions. The story was so compelling, and sweet that it actually made me cry.

So although The Artist is not a talkie, it has already become one of the best movies of the year. That right there says alot about that it's a movie worth seeing.

The Artist will be opening on Wednesday, 23rd of November in a theater near you.

Retro News Films: Princess Grace of Monaco & The Duchess of Cambridge Wedding Dress

Today billions of people from around the world witnessed the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middletone. And what a spectacular wedding that was!

Yes, I too was thrilled with anticipation as I was awaiting for the bride to show up in her wedding dress. And finally the big revealed! Catherine looked absolutely breathtaking! There she was this poised, elegant, and unassuming young modern woman wearing a Grace Kelly's vintage inspired wedding dress!

Grace Kelly Princess of Monaco and Her Bridal Party

I was totally blown away with The Duchess of Cambridge classic dress look! I would have thought that she would go with a more modern sleek look, which by the way she eventually did when she changed to her second dress she wore tonight for the reception. She still though kept it in the same princess style look.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised how this young woman appreciates sophistication and simplicity at the same. And although Catherine's dress had similar cut and style like Grace's dress, she made sure to add her own signature look by adding for instance the V and heart shape design to the lace top. And we can't forget the delicate tiara with the veil which completed that perfect princes look!

Grace Kelly the Hollywood star had become Grace Princess of Monaco in April 18, 1956 when she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. And like the Royal Wedding back then and the one today both the bride and groom looked a bit tense. But of course who wouldn't be? Give them a break. It was after all their wedding day!

Let's take a look back in time before Grace Kelly became a princess:

Elizabeth Taylor & Spencer Tracy in Father's Little Dividend (1951)

Elizabeth Taylor was one of the last movie actress of the Golden Age era. She moved audiences with her captivating performance and stunning beauty. They said that she also had a great sense of humour. And with that in mind we wanted to present to you the film comedy in which she starred:

Father's Little Dividend (1951)

Newly happily married Kay Dunstan (Elizabeth Taylor) announces that she and her husband Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor) are going to have their first baby. This news left her father Stanley (Spencer Tracy) having to come to grips with the fact that he will soon be a granddad, which he was not truly happy about.

Father's Little Dividend was semi-remade in 1995 as Father of the Bride Part II, with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton in Tracy and Bennett's roles. However, Keaton's character also has a baby and the plot has many similarities to this movie.

Enjoy!

She will truly be missed!

The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Night the Roof Fell In (1962 Episode)

Have you had a day when things just seem to be going bad? Perhaps you were tired or just had a long day. Then when you got home you felt that no one understood you.

This episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show both Rob (Dick Van Dyke) and Laura (Mary Taylor Moore) had a rough day. Things started small. Then after a few misunderstandings and confusion things got bigger and uglier even to the point that...well see for yourself.

Movie Review: Bringing Up Baby

Bringing Up Baby (1938) is now one of my favorites old movie comedies of all times! If you want a super funny movie that would make you laugh all the way through this movie is absolutely for you!

Both Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn nailed the characters just perfectly. I am a huge fan of movies where the characters are oblivious to the circumstances surrounding them and where they can't seem to get away from it, which this movie was all about. Both Grant and Hepburn were super hilarious and witty, which made the movie totally enjoyable from the start to the finish.

At TCM you can watch a small scene where the characters happened to bump into each other at a restaurant where they ended up having a wardrobe malfunction:

I totally recommend this movie!
I am sure that you will also love it!

I give this movie my retro seal of approval:
